Artists: Marlis Petersen

Stephan Matthias Lademann

Title: Dimensionen – Welt

Catalogue No.: SM 274

Release: 03.11.2017

Description

In the first part “world” of their new “dimensions” trilogy Marlis Petersen and Stephan Matthias Lademann make a journey through 100 years of musical romanticism – an epoch in which natural images of various kinds play a central role as the projection and reflection surface of human feelings and longings. We can hear compositions by Franz Schubert, Clara and Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Richard Wagner, Sigurd von Koch and Hans Sommer, who are concerned with the themes of “heaven and earth”, “man and nature”, “lot and knowledge” and “hope and longing “.

Marlis Petersen is a lyrical soprano, touring worldwide since 2003. Everybody knows her as Alban Berg’s heroine Lulu, which she presented in ten different productions worldwide, most recently at the Bavarian State Opera (just released on DVD) and Metropolitan Opera. The magazine “opernwelt” has already honored her for the third time with the title “Singer of the Year”. In January 2017 she was part of the great Elbphilharmonie-opening with Jörg Widmann’s “Arche” under the direction of Kent Nagano. Marlis Petersen has been dedicated to the genre “Lied” for several years.

Münchner Symphoniker – Franz Schubert: Symphonien Nr. 4 & 7

Title: Franz Schubert: Symphonien Nr. 4 & 7

Catalogue No.: SM273

Release: 20.10.2017

Description

The present release of Symphonies 4 and 7 must be understood both as an evaluation of the joint work over past years with the Münchner Symphoniker, and also as a look ahead at what is yet to come. Which composer would be better suited to such a Janus-like look than Schubert – for whom the open, the unspoken and the hoped-for played such an enormous role compositionally as well as biographically?

The logo of the Munich Symphony Orchestra shows a golden angel on the banks of the river Isar – wing tips point skywards, keeping vigil over the Bavarian capital. As one of the city’s four symphony orchestras, the Munich Symphony is strongly committed to Munich and its musical traditions. “The Sound of Our City” is the orchestra’s motto as well as its mission: With four subscription concert series in all of Munich’s major concert venues, the Munich Symphony is one of the city’s most renowned ensembles, while on its numerous national and international tours it takes the “Sound of Our City” out beyond the city boundary.
Kevin John Edusei is one of today’s most promising young conductors. He is known for his delicate, clear conducting which creates space for new nuances in a wide-rangingrepertoire from baroque to contemporary music.Since the season 2014/2015 he has brought exceptional new visions to the Münchner Symphoniker as their chief conductor and has established a strong relationship with the audience.

Duo Leonore – Brahms Cello-Sonaten

Artists: Duo Leonore

Title: Brahms Cello-Sonaten

Catalogue No.: SM269

Release: 13.10.2017

Description

Johannes Brahms once stated himself that, besides learning the piano as his main instrument, he was also taught the violin, horn and cello during his early years. In any case, an early “Duo for Pianoforte and Violoncello”, which was later destroyed by the composer but is known to have been performed under the pseudonym “Karl Würth” in a private concert on July 5, 1851, marked the start of Johannes Brahms’s life-long compositional interest in the cello, the second most prominent string instrument after the violin. In addition to the two particularly noteworthy “Sonatas for Pianoforte and Violoncello” on this CD, No. 1 in E minor op. 38 and No. 2 in F major op. 99, which are undoubtedly among the most important contributions to the cello sonata genre of the 19th century, special mention should also be made of the great cello solo in the slow movement of the second Piano Concerto in B flat major op. 83 and the cello solo part in the famous Double Concerto for violin, cello and orchestra in A minor op. 102, which was originally conceived as a concerto for solo cello, and the virtuosic cello solo at the start of the opening movement of the second String Quartet in G major op. 111, which Brahms actually intended to be his last ever composition when he wrote it in 1890.

Maja Weber, cello, and Per Lundberg, piano, have been playing chamber music together for more than twenty years, mostly in piano quartets and quintets. Maja (also a Member of the Stradivari Quartet) plays the Bonamy Dobree-Suggia cello made by Antonio Stradivari in 1717. Per’s activities as a concert pianist and chamber musician form the two main focuses of his artistic profile. As a chamber musician he performs in various ensembles across Europe. He works also with Sara Trobäck Hesselink and Claes Gunnarsson, who are respectively the leader and solo cellist of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra.

Sergey Malov – Hommage á Ysaye

Artists: Sergey Malov

Title: Hommage á Ysaye

Catalogue No.: SM275

Release: 29.09.2017

Description

As one of the greatest violin virtuosos, Eugene Ysaÿe inspired the world. He was also a compassionate chamber musician, great teacher and fascinating conductor. It was after his return to Belgium in July 1923, when, at the age of 65 Ysaÿe wrote his bestknown work: the Six Sonatas for violin solo Op.27, each of them dedicated to a European violinist. Like the Solo sonatas and Partitas of Bach and like the 24 Capricci of Paganini, Ysaÿe’s sonatas demonstrate not only astonishing technical innovations, but are also a powerful poetic expression of his time. On his new CD Sergey Malov combines Ysaÿe’s violin sonatas with works by Bach and those European violinists, to whom these sonatas are dedicated.

Supersonic Award 2017

Description

Johann Sebastian Bach’s suites for cello solo are arguably the purest form of music, works that require no explanation or background knowledge. Johann Sebastian Bach made one of his most profound affirmations, a Gradus ad Parnassum, which in six stages sets out an intellectual and technical challenge that is and will probably remain peerless in the history of music for our instrument. My colleague and friend, Prof. Peter Langgartner from the Mozarteum University of Salzburg pointed out to me that the Prelude of the first suite contains Luther’s chorale “VomHimmelhoch, da komm’ ich her” (from Heaven above, from thence I come).I had always presumed so and was grateful for confirmation that the cello suites make allusions to chorales and religious messages. I have therefore found a musical way of opening a spiritual door to the suites and added chorales to Suites 1, 3, and 5 in the mould of sounds from John Cage’s work One 8, chorales that in my opinion are definitely consistent with messages conveyed in the suites. I find that John Cage’s music shares similarities with Bach’s. His music allows for inner reflection, providing a contemplative point of calm. Cage said the purpose of music is “to cleanse the soul and bring it peace, thus making it amenable to divine influences”. My son Immanuel intones the chorales to this special music; each chorale is followed by two Bach suites.

La Cetra Consort – Italian Rococo at The Hermitage

Title: Italian Rococo at The Hermitage

Catalogue No.: SM 258

Release: 09.06.2017

Description

In the 18th and 19th centuries, the Hermitage in St Petersburg not only housed famous art collections, which were made accessible to the public after the October Revolution, but also hosted glamorous musical events. Catherine the Great had the Hermitage Theatre built, which still stands to this day, and the operas that were magnificently staged there were central to courtly festivities.

The idea for this CD came in conjunction with Claire Genewein’s elevation to Doctor of Creative and Performing Arts at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands in June 2014. In her thesis, she showed that in 18th century Italy, instrumental music was rehearsed with the aid of textual reflections – a method which, over time, was almost completely lost and which is hardly practised today. This CD documents the tradition of the mutual interaction between vocal and instrumental music and makes this stimulating impetus audible.
La Cetra Consort consists of members of the La Cetra Baroque Orchestra Basel, who cultivate this genre within a smaller and more intimate setting. Claire Genewein works as a flautist in various ensembles such as La Cetra Baroque Orchestra Basel, L’Orfeo, Venice Baroque Orchestra, Il gusto barocco, L’Arcadia, and Ensemble Miroir.

Max Müller – Tierisch!

Künstler: Max Müller

Titel: Tierisch!

Katalog Nr: SM 240

Veröffentlichung: 24.03.2017

 Produktbeschreibung
