Kalandos Ensemble – Roma Amor

Title: Roma Amor

Catalogue No.: SM 115

Release: 21.08.2007

Description

If a non gypsy musician founds a Hungarian band and leads them even as a Primás, this venture can be called easily adventurous. Exactly this happened as the Netherlands Violinist Karel Boeschoten founded the group of Kalandos (= adventurously in Hungarian language) in Spring 2002. Since that time Kalandos is touring successfully in Switzerland, Germany, France and Hungary. The two Musicians Karel Boeschoten (violin) and János Rigó (Cimbalom) form the basis of the ensemble. All musicians performed on this record are playing world-wide with the famous gypsy Ensemble Rajko and playing together with well-known musicians such as Lájos Boross, Sándor Jároka, Sandor Rigó (Buffo) as well as Sándor Lakatos and Roby Lakatos. Karel Boeschoten selected title, which shows the Hungarian people and gypsy music in its most different manifestations for this CD Roma AmoR. On the record you will find among other things Hungarian gypsy romances and dances for competitions as well as trips into the world of the Romanian people Music. Since the fantastic appearance of MADONNA with the Gypsy Punks Gogol Bordello in the “Live Earth Concert” in London gypsy Music is again in all mouth. Completely in “Gypsy language”, the Trio with Madonna showed a sighing violin and a rhythm guitar, Roma music of its Best – like on this album.

Casal Quartett – Tango Sensations

Artists: Casal Quartett

Title: Tango Sensations

Catalogue No.: SM 106

Release: 08.12.2006

Description

Due to economic rather than artistic reasons, the modern concert-business opens its doors more and more to socalled crossover-projects. This display of music`s universal coherence sometimes looks rather forced or superficial. Some love the idea and tend to go to concerts more often, whereas purists stay at home.

Few genres in music tend to be as traditional and conservative as the string quartet. Its repertoire is vast and features music of all styles since the 17th century. The core-repertoire from Haydn, Beethoven through to Bartók and Schostakowitsch dominates the stage. Unfortunately we still meet producers who stubbornly reject an expansion of the repertoire and refuse contemporary music or even a new idea of how to play a Haydn quartet today. We believe that the versatility of stringquartet music will save the genre from a premature fate. One lifetime is too short to play everything that has been written for quartet. So if we play, it should be the music that appeals to us most, if it be a fourvoice invention of the renaissance, late Beethoven, Erwin Schulhoff or Astor Piazzolla. Those who look at Piazzolla`s life and compositions closely without just listening to his »hits«, will be amazed what a rollercoaster ride he went through. He grew up with jazz; the traditional tango fed him for a long time. With Alberto Ginastera he conquered classical and new music and left Argentinia and finally, the composer Nadja Boulanger led him to his destiny to give the tango a new definition.

As with any good music, the result had to go through a time of evolvement that certainly has not come to an end yet. Encounters with the Argentinian musicians Giora Feidman (clarinet) and Michael Zisman (bandoneon) have helped us to understand tango as a »foreign« culture much better. We hope that every listener will feel this inspiration on this CD. Michael Zisman recorded with us those »Tango Sensations«, that seemed specially important to Piazzolla. They sound different from what we normaly expect from him. They are intimate, vulnerable, uniquely his, painful, sometimes angry. They are always the work of a great composer who honestly shows what he feels.

Natasha Korsakova – Opera Fantasies

Title: Opera Fantasies

Catalogue No.: SM 101

Release: 19.10.2006

Description

Astonishing virtuosity and an incredible abundance of arrangements are two of the most important hallmarks of nineteenth-century music. In the absence of sound recording, a great variety of arrangements were made, not only of large works like operas and symphonies, but also of chamber music, songs and piano pieces. The famous violinist Natasha Korsakova put exactly this thought into practice. With its great playing of the violin, she brings us the large opera in occupation with piano into our living rooms. Their special love e.g. for the music of George Gershwin developed already early. The mixture from classical lyric poetry and Dramatic, the momentum of Varieté Songs and dragging along jazz rhythms made Gershwin a singular composer. Beside classical authors in great arrangements such as Verdi, Rossini and Offenbach (first recording) straight Gershwin with “Porgy and Bess” places the principal part of these CD. The Gershwin pieces are arranged by the famous violonist Jascha Heifetz.

Renowned for her superb technique, tonal colorings and captivating interpretations, Natasha Korsakova has internationally established herself as one of the most excellent and charismatic young violinists. The SÜDDEUTSCHE ZEITUNG hailed Ms.Korsakova’s artistry as „a sinfully beautiful listening experience“ and music that „speaks of the rich traditions of the passionate Russian violin school“. This „exceptional violin talent“ (FAZ) is a popular guest for international and German orchestras and chamber music venues.

Beatrice Berthold – Luis Orlandini: Grande Duo Concertante

Title: Grande Duo Concertante

Catalogue No.: SM 102

Release: 19.10.2006

Description

The guitar is one of the oldest and, in all its various forms, one of the most ubiquitous of instruments. The special interest it awakened in the fi rst half of the nineteenth century coincided with the transition in the late eighteenth century from the earlier four- and fi vecourse forms (i.e. with four or fi ve pairs of strings) to the standard six-string form we know today, which has a more voluminous tone and enables more wide-ranging use as a solo instrument, in accompanying the voice and in chamber music. Although the guitar was at home in Spain, it was also common and popular in Italy, France (Paris), Germany, Austria (Vienna), England and Russia. A succession of important guitarists wrote pioneering guitar methods and studies and compositions for the salon and the concert hall.

Beatrice Berthold has pursued a busy concert career which led her to several countries of Europe, South America and to the USA. She has performed with the radio symphony orchestras of Hamburg (NDR), Cologne (WDR), Luxemburg and Prague and with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra (BSO), Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonic Orchestra ‘Arthur Rubinstein’ Lodz, Orquestra Sinfonica de Porto Alegre, Orquesta ‘Gran Mariscal de Ayscucho’ Caracas, etc. Luis Orlandini has premiered more than 50 works by Chilean composers, some of them commissioned by him. His publications include a guitar music series featuring contemporary Chilean composers. He has received several high awards in his home country. In addition to his busy international concert schedule, Luis Orlandini is professor for the guitar and chamber music at the Universidad de Chile and at the Pontifi cia Universidad Católica de Chile, and adjudicates at many international guitar competitions.
