Hansjörg Schellenberger – Haydn und Mozart

Title: Haydn und Mozart

Catalogue No.: C 130199

Release: 07.04.2014

Description

After numerous years as resident composer and Director of Court Music at the Esterhazy castle, Joseph Haydn’s fame as a great composer of genius had spread across all of Europe – no wonder, when one considers the consistency with which he developed the form of the symphony and the string quartet in more than 100 works, from “Sturm und Drang” to the beginnings of Romanticism, not to mention his many other creations. So it is no surprise that around 1786 he was offered a very special commission from Spain: the diocese in southern Cadiz asked for a composition to be heard at the climax of Holy Week on Good Friday, the “tres horas”, which are dedicated to the memory of the death of Jesus Christ. The subject was the meditation on the “Seven Last Words of Our Saviour on the Cross”.

Without any commission or payment, purely for pleasure, W.A. Mozart composed this quartet for a “most esteemed” friend – the most wonderful work that was ever written for the oboe.
Mozart always wrote his solo works closely related to the abilities of his performers: Ramm’s playing and virtuosity on the oboe must have really inspired him. If one compares the 1781 quartet with the Oboe Concerto K.285d which was written
in Salzburg in 1777 for the oboist Ferlendis, not only do we see that this concerto is far less virtuosic, but we also hear music that is considerably less inspired and not as filled with musical richness.

Margit Anna Süss – Zeitenwandel

Title: Zeitenwandel – Spohr, Bach, Haydn, Hamel, Hindemith

Catalogue No.: C 130175

Release: 23.10.2009

Description

Renowned solo harpist Margit-Anna Süß, a native of Munich, who also appeared as a guest harpist with the Berlin- and Bamberg Symphonic Orchestras, describes a journey through musical eras on her new CD “Zeitenwandel” (lit.: Change of Times), which is a co-production with the ‘Bayerischer Rundfunk’.

Ms. Süß explains: “I would love to show what music intended to express in different eras and how this can be translated into harp-playing. I deliberately dropped any chronological order as to offer the listener more contrast. These are not exclusively original oeuvres as I am really interested in valuable compositional literature. There is a certain tendency nowadays to record single ‘movements’ instead of complete sonatas or oeuvres – so to speak, chocolate candies of a distinct flavour which are sized-down for easy instead of attentive listening thus creating a pleasant mood for the listener – almost like background muzak in a supermarket.”

Her recordings of wonderful oeuvres by Bach, Haydn, Hamel and Hindemith prove how excellently she carried out her ambitious project.

Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana – Hansjörg Schellenberger: Lost & Found

Title: Concertini for Oboe “Lost & Found”

Catalogue No.: C 130168

Release: 02.02.2008

Description

Lost & Found means stumbling across music by pure chance, fortuitous circumstances and sometimes after a long and arduous search; music composed a long time ago, in most cases performed then and since lost in the mists of time.

The nineteenth century plays a central role in all this, since the oboe as a solo instrument had by that time been relegated to a wallflower existence and was only perceived by the music-loving public as part of the overall orchestral timbre. If Robert Schumann had not written his famous Romances op. 94, there would have not been a single composer of reputation in the Romantic era to have written anything for the oboe.

We hope that these recordings will bear witness to the treasures to be found when such a journey of discovery leads to the production of a whole CD, especially since the nineteenth century produced such a cornucopia of music, including that of some outstanding composers of the second and third rank.

On this Record you are discovering first recordings by:

Ignaz Lachner (1807 – 1895)

Hansjörg Schellenberger – Romantische Verwandlungen

Titel: Romantische Verwandlungen

Katalog Nr.: C 130151

Veröffentlichung: 07.10.2007

Produktbeschreibung

Stefan Dohr – Markus Becker: Franz u. Richard Strauss

Titel: Franz u. Richard Strauss – Musik für Horn und Klavier

Katalog Nr.: C 130120

Veröffentlichung: 26.10.2000

Produktbeschreibung

Had his son Richard not become world famous for his tone poems and operas, Franz Strauss (1822-1905) would today surely be one of those forgotten musicians who were recognized as important artistic personalities in their lifetime. Franz Strauss became a living legend as a horn virtuoso, by “breathing soul, as it were, into the unthankful instrument”, as on critic put it at the time. Even Richard Wagner hat to admit: “Old Strauss is an unbearable fellow, but when he plays the horn one can’t really mind him”.

This recording presents the complete works of Franz Strauss for horn and piano accompaniment. It’s no surprise that young Richard Strauss followed his father’s taste both stylistically and in the choice of genre. With astonishing maturity, he created a work which can still hold its own in today’s concert halls. It still makes the same demands on a horn-players ability, which caused Richard Strauss to consider revising it in order to render the “almost unperformable ‘Variations’ “playable “for human lungs and human lips, as he himself put it. It is not certain if such a revision took place. If so, it is not existent.

Produktbeschreibung

Mozart’s Divertimento KV 563 and Schoenberg’s String Trio op. 45: it is rare to find the juxtaposition of two compositions for identical instruments producing so many musicological and aesthetic cross-references. And understandably also a stimulus to new considerations, for example about the place that “entertainment” had in the context of the conception of “serious”, high-quality music in earlier times or could justify today

Produktbeschreibung

Joseph Haydn dedicated several of his Piano Trios to women, for example the three trios Hob. XV: 27 to 29, which are dedicated to Therese Bartolozzi. The composer had probably met the 20 year-old daughter of an Aachen dancing teacher, then Therese Jansen, before her marriage. Haydn not only dedicated the three piano trios to her but also his last three piano sonatas Hob. XVI: 50 to 52. The technical demands that all these compositions make on the performer prove that Therese Jansen-Bartolozzi was a very good pianist.

It is no longer possible to discover what kind of relationship existed between this young women and Joseph Haydn, but it is certain that the virtuoso pianistic capabilities of the dedicatee determine the compositional structure of the three piano trios to a considerable amount.
