Jan Schulte-Bunert

Jan Schulte-Bunert discovered his passion for the saxophone at an early age. He won a prize in the national finals of the “Jugend musiziert” competition and was awarded first prize at the International Competition in Kerkrade.

He studied the saxophone with Johannes Ernst at the University of the Arts in Berlin, with Jean-Denis Michat at the Conservatoire National de Lyon and with Arno Bornkamp at the Sweelinck Conservatorium in Amsterdam. With his saxophone quartet, he then studied chamber music with Friedemann Weigle, violist in the renowned Artemis String Quartet, at the Hanns Eisler College of Music in Berlin, graduating with distinction.

In 2003 Jan Schulte-Bunert won a prize at the German Music Competition and in the same year received the Cronenpreis of the Holsten brewery. He went on to win prizes at the International Chamber Music Competition in Illzach in France and at the International Gaudeamus Competition in Amsterdam. He and his saxophone quartet received the 2008 Prize of the Friends of JeunessesMusicales.

He regularly performs as a soloist with renowned orchestras that include the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Berlin and the orchestras of the Beethovenhalle in Bonn and the Staatstheater in Saarbrücken. Jan Schulte-Bunert has been performing regularly with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra since 2002.

He performs as a soloist and with his saxophone quartet clair-obscur all over Europe, Asia and the USA at venues that include Carnegie Hall in New York, the Konzerthaus am Gendarmenmarktin Berlin, the Schlossfestspiele in Ludwigsburg, the Festival of Mecklenburg-West Pomerania and the Tonhalle in Düsseldorf.

Jan Schulte-Bunert has recorded numerous CDs. Norddeutscher Rundfunk, DeutschlandRadio and Hessischer Rundfunk have broadcast live concerts with him and produced portraits of him and his quartet.

He has recorded two CDs with the pianist Florian von Radowitz and six with his quartet, all of which have drawn much attention.

In addition to his activities as a practising musician, he lectures at the International Master Class for classical saxophone in Laubach and at the Jeunesses MusicalesInternational Chamber Music Course at Weikersheim Palace. He has also lectured at master classes elsewhere in Europe as well as in the USA and Asia.

Jan Schulte-Bunert lectures in classical saxophone at the Darmstadt Academy of Music and at the Rostock Academy of Music and Theatre.
